Frequently Asked Questions
Where are you based?
I live on the beautiful rolling hills of Maunu, Whangarei. I charge a standard rate for milage for locations further than 30km from my home. Get in touch if you'd like to know if additional travel charges would apply for your desired location.
What type of sessions do you photograph?
I enjoy photographing all session types but documenting every season of motherhood is very dear to my heart. I specialize in on-location family lifestyle photography.
I am currently working on adding a commercial photography section to my website for local businesses. I enjoy the creative process of following a photography brief and creating engaging content. If you have a project in mind, do reach out. You can fill out a Dreamer's Brief (found in the packages section) or contact me directly to discuss your specific project.
Unfortunately I'm not taking bookings for weddings or events (including baby showers, births and birthday parties.)
What is Lifestyle Photography?
It's a non-traditional shooting style. A fusion of both directed portraits and documentary styled photography. For example, I may ask your family to group a certain way and then give a series of directions that will help me capture images that are rich in movement, togetherness and joy. The main objective during a lifestyle session is to keep the attention mostly away from the camera and on each other. This is when you will relax and have fun!
When do you schedule sessions?
Outdoor sessions are generally scheduled during daylight savings, any day 1-2 hours before sunset or after sunrise. This is when lighting is best. The sun is low, soft and luminous!
Indoor sessions are scheduled during school hours or on weekends between 10am - 2pm.
What locations do you use?
A beach or country setting are popular choices for the family lifestyle or mini sessions. There are a range of suitable locations around our 17 acre property, just 10 minutes west of Whangarei, including: country farm gate, hill top with views of the Otaika Valley, romantic stone walls, an historic barn, an everglade surrounded by an ancient totara grove AND even a tropical banana plantation for those who may be wanting something completely different! This is something we can discuss in your initial phone consultation.
Do you run specials?
Yes, I run specials throughout the year. If you'd like to be one of the first people to hear about my specials, sign up to my monthly newsletter. You can find the sign up form down the bottom of my web page. Returning clients will automatically receive $100 off your next booking fee if booking within a 12 month period, $75 off if booking within a 2 year period or $50 off if booking within a 3 year period! **Excludes bookings for mini sessions and extended family gatherings.
Can I print my images myself?
Yes! All my package deals include a number of edited/retouched digital downloads with print release. You also have the ability to order professional prints or framed prints right from your Queensberry gallery. Queensberry is an exceptional printing company based right here in Auckland, New Zealand! You can be sure you will recieve only the best quality prints... it's all about the prints!
How long does my session last?
- Mini and Milestones Sessions 15-20 minutes
- Maternity and Family Sessions 1 hour
- Newborn Sessions 1.5 hours
I want to work with you! How do I book my session?
Great! If you have further questions you can book in a call with me to discuss your individual requirements or if you're ready, follow the 'book now' button. If you choose to proceed with your booking I will email you an invoice for your 50% deposit to secure your booking and we will go from there!
What should I wear?
Upon booking with me I will email you a PDF of my Journey Photography Styling Guide (which is more about what not to wear.) I am available for consultation on this if you are still unsure. If you are considering booking a maternity shoot I am currently building my client wardrobe for maternity gowns so, if you don't have a suitable dress or gown of your own, you are welcome to choose one from my 'wish list' and I will order one for my client wardrobe in your size!
Should I get my hair and makeup done professionally?
While it comes down to personal preference, I recommend you consider getting your makeup done professionally to have you looking and feeling your best! If you do, try to make contact early to book in the day of your shoot to avoid disappointment. Here are a few recommended beauty therapists around Whangarei:
- Teresa Colthurst - Waterfall & Waves - hair/makeup - 021 0221 2359
- Katie Butler - beauty therapy/hair/makeup - 021 912 122
- Kirsten Williams - Beauty On The Move - beauty therapy/makeup - 027 596 5000
What happens if the weather is bad?
Cloudy weather is not a problem. However, if it's forecast for showers etc I will contact you as soon as possible to reschedule, usually at least a day before.
Can I order an album through you or should I DIY?
Yes, you can certainly order an album through me! I use Milk Books, an affordable New Zealand based company, to print my family albums. They come with a linen cover in a variety of colors and sizes and are excellent quality! If you're interested to know more about the albums please get in touch or if you're thinking about creating your own you can check out their website here. I can't stress the importance of choosing a quality company like Milk Books for your albums/photo books. You want them to last a lifetime!
When will my gallery be ready?
This is my favorite part of the whole process, the big reveal via your online gallery! *Cue emotive music...* Galleries are generally ready between 1-2 weeks after your photoshoot!
Do you have to share our pictures on social media?
Absolutely not. As much as I love to share my work on social media, I will always obtain permission before sharing anything (I will usually check in with you a few days after delivering your gallery.) Please don't hesitate to voice any concerns you have around this.
